Shadow Dance

In this oil painting, I explore the intersection of traditional East Asian paper-cutting art and contemporary composition. The vibrant betta fish, rendered with photorealistic detail, emerges from a world of shadow and negative space—symbolizing the relationship between what is revealed and what remains hidden.
The crimson fins of the betta create a striking contrast against the muted background, while the black silhouettes reference the ancient art of paper cutting. Circular geometric elements guide the viewer’s eye through the composition while adding layers of symbolic meaning—circles representing harmony, continuity, and perfection in many Eastern traditions.
This work continues my exploration of animal portraiture, where I combine technical precision with unexpected color relationships and compositional elements. The juxtaposition of the living creature against abstract forms invites viewers to contemplate their own relationship with nature and tradition in our increasingly modern world.
